Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Étienne

Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Étienne
(1772-1844)
   naturalist
Born in Étampes, Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire was interested in mineralogy before becoming professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History of Paris (1793), where he later worked with georges cuvier. In 1798, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire took part in Napoléon Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt (see napoléon i), where he made numerous observations on the diverse animal species (especially reptiles and fish). His work in comparative anatomy and paleontology was guided by the theory of a unique plan of organization of living beings and was based on the idea of the subordination of organs within the body and, above all, the anatomical connection and similarity of species that itself is the basis of comparative anatomy. He discovered a dental system in birds, using skeletal evidence to understand the form of living creatures. This work also helped to establish the field of embryology. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire's studies eventually led him to oppose the theories of Cuvier, and he asserted that the environment could effect changes in species. He was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1807.
